Script for Short Film Presentation

Slide 1 – Introduce myself and what the film is called

Slide 2 OUTLINE OF IDEA – The outline of my idea is about a married couple who are called Mark (44) and Amy (43). Mark recently encounters difficulty at work as they had to dismiss him from his job as they couldn’t afford to have him anymore. Because of this Mark takes up a nasty habit of drinking and a taste of violence. This story is about how Amy tries to help Mark to get over the hurdle that he has come across.

Slide 3 WHY I HAVE CHOSEN THIS IDEA – I have chosen the areas of domestic abuse and alcohol abuse because I feel like it is not spoken about enough, and is happening to people every day and anyone can be affected by these areas of abuse.
From my target audience research, I found that there is a gap in the market for a social realist film about domestic abuse and alcoholism short film.

Slide 4 TARGET AUDIENCE – The target audience for “Change” is for ages ranging from 18-45 year olds. I have chosen this age range purely because they might be able to relate to the themes and issues that are being conveyed. Another reason why I have chosen this age range is because it will create awareness about domestic abuse and alcohol abuse.

Slide 5 EQUIPMENT – KF Productions will be using equipment provided by The Beacon School. Due to an agreement we are able to access this equipment, free of charge. I will be using a:

Camera – Canon Legria HF R66

Sound Recorder – Tascam DR 05

Tripod – Libeck Fluid Head

This is all very important to my production because a company in which KF Productions are in partnership with has allowed us to loan this equipment for our production free of charge.

Slide 6 LOCATIONS – The locations that are going to be used in change are locations that are recognisable by anyone as the genre of the film is social realism. This is a convention of social realism.

Slide 7 PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS – The personnel requirements for the production will need a small skeleton crew of up to 5 people, their roles include:
u A director, writer and producer which is done by one person only
u Lighting operator
u Assistant cinematographer
u Director of photography
u Sound recordist

I have chosen these particular roles because I feel like they are a vital part of the production process.

The director/writer and producer are a main factor because they have the idea and the vision for the finished product, they interpret the script and the story to themselves but keeping it as close as possible.

Lighting operator is important because they would need to light up places that are not covered by the indoor lights so we would need a lighting operator to put in lights so the set is lit up.

Assistant cinematographer is important because they can throw ideas to the director of photography and work together.

Director of photography runs all the camera operators and is in charge of how the frames look, also he is in charge of the lighting operators, he has an important role to achieve.

Finally the sound recordist, I have chosen this role because we want the best quality sound when filming because we want the audience to get the  best experience out of the film.
Slide 8 BUDGET – The budget KF Productions has lined up for this production is a minimum budget of little to nothing, a desired budget would be £10,000.

Slide 9 Project Schedule - The schedule I have chosen to use is that I film 4 days a week for two weeks. I feel that this will allow enough time to capture the footage I need to make this a great and successful short film. The editing process will take 3-5 days.

Slide 10 DISTRIBUTION - The distribution for the short film would be on YouTube or Vimeo as it is easy access for anyone who has access to the internet and on top of that it is free so it doesn’t affect my budget.

Slide 11 - Thank you for listening to my presentation. Are there any questions?

Focus Group

A focus group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of people are asked their perceptions, opinions and attitudes about a product.

I am conducting a focus group to get their opinions and attitudes towards these two films and see what they like and don't like about the films, and then I can introduce their techniques used within my short film.

Research Market

I have researched into the market for my Social Realism short film and found that the BFI has stated that social realism is better than any other genre purely because it is pushing the boundaries in the effort to put the experiences of real Britons on the screen, and shaping the ideas of what British cinema can be.

http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/1037898/

By reading this article it has shown me that Social Realism is a gift to the big screen as it is showing what life really is and I feel that there is a potential market for my film as I am showing what life is like for some people living in Britain.

My film is on alcoholism and domestic violence. I have chosen these themes and issues as I feel there there has not been many films which create awareness for these issues and I would like to promote these forms of abuse and help people who are in these situations.

Analysis of questionnaire

I made a questionnaire about the idea of my short film and I gave it out to 14 people to fill out and to find out whether they agree with my idea or not.

I asked a question on what Social Realist themes and issues they would be like to watch and the results were:

Drug AbuseAlcoholismDomestic AbuseTeenage PregnancyRelationshipsEmotional Disorder21.4%28.6%28.6%
Drug Abuse4
Alcoholism1
Domestic Abuse4
Teenage Pregnancy1
Relationships1
Emotional Disorder3

Drug abuse - 28.6%
Alcoholism - 7.1%
Domestic abuse - 28.6%
Teenage pregnancy - 7.1%
Relationships - 7.1%
Emotional disorder - 21.4%

The two that link in with my idea for my short film is domestic abuse and alcoholism. The main ones the people who filled out my questionnaire chose was domestic abuse and drug abuse. This is important for my research because drug abuse and domestic abuse are high figures for what people want to see made as a film to make others more aware and I would potentially change my overall idea but because of the time constraints I cannot follow through with that. I feel from what people cannot see is that alcoholism can be a factor to why someone is being domestically abuse and that is why I have chosen those two themes and issues.

I asked another question, "my themes and issues are domestic abuse and alcohol abuse, how likely are you to watch my film?

Not Likely12345Likely

Results
1 - 0%
2 - 21.4 %
3 - 14.3%
4 - 50%
5 - 14.3%

Overall from the results this shows that I have a market for my film because 50% of the people who filled out the questionnaire said they would most likely watch my media product which is very important to me as I want to make the public more aware of these issues that can occur to anyone.

Finally I asked my audience that is their any themes/issues that they consider to be under-explored in film, and some of the responses they gave back gave me more ideas for future films; such as: elderly abuse, terminal illness and gender discrimination. These issues are under-explored within the filmic world, therefore would be good projects to do in the future but someone did put down and say domestic abuse is under-explored and I agree with that because there is not enough awareness out there for domestic abuse and not many people wouldn't know what to do if they are in that situation.

Overall this questionnaire and the feedback I have received has forwarded my idea and has shown me that there is an audience that would watch my film.
